We inspect GP practices in Wales to check people are receiving good care.
How we inspect
We look at how GP practices:
- Meet the Health and Care Standards 2015
- Meet other professional standards and guidance as applicable
- We also consider information from self assessment tools such as the Clinical Governance Practice Self Assessment Toolkit (CGPSAT)
Our inspections of GP practices are usually announced. Services receive up to twelve weeks notice of an inspection.
Our inspections are carried out by a HIW inspector, two external reviewers (a GP and Practice Manager who have recent hands on experience of general practice) and a voluntary lay reviewer.
GP Stakeholder Reference Group
Our GP Stakeholder Reference Group provides feedback on our plans to help us make sure that are our inspections are credible and fit for purpose. The group consists of representatives from GPs, nurses, practice managers, health boards, Welsh Government, Public Health Wales and Community Health Councils.
The following document provides guidance about what we will look at during an inspection. If you would like a copy of our inspection workbook please contact hiwinspections@gov.wales quoting which inspection type of workbook you require.
