We inspect all types of dental practices, including NHS practices and practices which undertake a mixture of private and NHS work in Wales to check people are receiving good care.
How we inspect
We look at how dentists:
- Comply with the Private Dentistry (Wales) Regulations 2017.
- Comply with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2000 (and its subsequent amendments 2006 and 2011) (where applicable)
- Meet any other relevant professional standards and guidance such as the General Dental Council Standards for the Dental Team
Our inspections of dentists are usually announced. Services usually receive up to twelve weeks notice of an inspection.
Our inspections are carried out by a HIW inspector and an external reviewer who is a dentist with recent hands on experience of dentistry.
The following document provides guidance about what we will look at during an inspection. If you would like a copy of our inspection workbook please contact hiw.inspections@gov.wales quoting which inspection type of workbook you require.
