HIW register most private dental practices unconditionally. If a dental team requires additional skills/experience to perform certain treatments and this increases a dental team’s scope of practice, HIW may add conditions to the practice’s registration.
In October 2024, HIW added two new application forms to its website regarding the use of Class 3b/4 lasers to provide dental treatments and the use of conscious sedation at private dental practices.
- Dental treatments using a Class3b/4 laser
Regulation 32 of the Private Dentistry (Wales) Regulations 2017 sets out the requirements for the use of Class3b/4 laser for private dental treatment. HIW require assurance that the registered setting is compliant with Regulation 32, and therefore require the registered provider to submit an application to provide dental treatments using a laser at HIW registered setting.
- Dental treatments using conscious sedation
Regulation 13 of the Private Dentistry (Wales) Regulations 2017 and the Welsh Government’s Service Standards for Conscious Sedation in a dental care setting policy set out the requirements for the use of conscious sedation in a dental practice.
HIW require assurance that the registered setting is compliant with Regulation 13 and Welsh Government standards, and therefore require the registered provider to submit an Application to provide conscious sedation at HIW registered setting.
ACTION NEEDED BY EXSITING PRIVATE DENTAL PRACTICES IN WALES
If you are using a Class 3b/4 laser for dental treatments or providing conscious sedation to patients, you must submit the relevant application form and supporting documentation to ensure your current HIW registration reflects the services provided. Please use your Objective Connect secure portal or email HIW.Registration@gov.wales by 31 December 2025.
During this time there will be no fee for the changes to the registration. When HIW receives your application with all the information listed in Section 1 of the application form, HIW will review the application and may undertake registration visit to ensure that we have gained the assurances required under the regulations.
Please email HIW.Registration@gov.wales if you require any further advice/guidance.
