Review of Armed Forces Healthcare in Wales

About this Review
Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) is undertaking a review of the adequacy, availability and accessibility of NHS provision for Armed Forces regular personnel and their families, reserve forces and veterans in Wales. This will primarily draw on the experiences of the Armed Forces community and will contribute to an assessment of whether existing service delivery is meeting their needs effectively. The outcome will also inform whether there is a need for specific quality standards and how HIW will incorporate a focus on the needs of the Armed Forces community into its routine inspection and review activities.
As part of this review we have produced two questionnaires, designed to capture the healthcare experiences of Armed Forces personnel in Wales. These questionnaires are for:
  1. Armed Forces Veterans (electronic questionnaire)Armed Forces Veterans (hard copy questionnaire).
  2. Serving Personnel and their families and Reserve Forces (electronic questionnaire)Serving Personnel and their families and Reserve Forces (hard copy questionnaire).
The details contained within these form a vital part of the evidence gathering for the HIW review. It is designed to provide us with information to help us understand how NHS services across Wales are delivered to the Armed Forces community. This process will help us to identify strengths as well as any barriers to achieving fair and equitable healthcare access, bearing in mind any prioritisation of treatment for illnesses or injury directly attributed to Service.
We will also be undertaking additional fieldwork across Wales, with the NHS, SSAFA, Royal British Legion Combat Stress and all other agencies and charities providing healthcare support to our Armed Forces community. This work will examine both physical and mental healthcare delivered by a number of providers and to ensure that all Service personnel are fully aware of what is available and that adequate signposting exists. We welcome any case histories/stories that will contribute to building a clear picture of what Armed Forces healthcare journey looks like.
We will not be producing local reports but questionnaire results and our fieldwork will inform our all Wales report which will be published in April 2012. Any information provided will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
Please complete the questionnaire (using the above links) by 20 February 2012, preferably by completing it electronically. Alternatively you can print off the questionnaire (using the links above) and send it FREEPOST to the address below.
