HIW who was established as the regulator of independent healthcare on April 1 2006 has full delegated authority for its regulatory decisions. HIW registers and inspects these services against the requirements of the Care Standards Act, the Private and Voluntary Healthcare Regulations and the National Minimum Standards made by the National Assembly for Wales.
The functions of the Local Supervising Authority (LSA) have transferred to HIW with effect from April 1 2006. The LSA for the statutory supervision of midwives in Wales involves preparing, appointing and developing supervisors of midwives.
HIW is responsible for co-ordinating the panel that scrutinises proposals from NHS organisations and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) wishing to establish (non-medical) Consultant Practitioner posts in Wales.
