Hospital Cleanliness Spot Checks PublicationsBackground to Healthcare Inspectorate Wales approach to the review of Hospital CleanlinessHealthcare Inspectorate Wales announced its intention to undertake unannounced hospital cleanliness spot checks in 2007 and began a rolling programme of visits to healthcare organisations across Wales in the same year. In determining the focus for these spot checks HIW has taken into consideration many different sources of information relevant to this agenda these include, organisation review of progress against Healthcare Standards for Wales, concerns and surveillance data. This combined information has shaped the direction of the spot check programme which is kept under review in light of any new information that comes to our attention. The tool used for hospital cleanliness spot check is based on the Infection Control Nurses Association (ICNA) tool. The approach adopted for hospital cleanliness spot checks relies on direct observation and some staff questioning with the request of some key documents.
