Report identifies cleanliness issues at Llandough Hospital
The report of an unannounced cleanliness spot check undertaken by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) to Llandough Hospital is being published today, 3 March 2010.
The visit was undertaken as part of HIW’s rolling programme of unannounced cleanliness spot checks.
Refurbishment work is being carried out at Llandough hospital to improve the patient environment, however the general standards of cleanliness in the public corridors was poor and cluttered
with equipment and beds which were visibly dusty.
The Operating Theatres, Anaesthetic rooms and Recovery area was found to have an acceptable standard of cleanliness.
The wards visited were found to have a poor standard of cleanliness with high level dust and issues in relation to estates were also identified. On ward East 8 we raised concerns in relation to the progress of an action plan, issued in May 2009, to address cleanliness and infection control issues. Following our visit ward East 8 was closed for refurbishment. We have been assured that the issues identified will be addressed as soon as possible.
We found that linen was being stored and segregated correctly in all of the areas visited.
Some staff in the areas visited had not received infection control training within the last 12 months and there was a tendency for staff to over rely on the use of gloves and the Health Board must take action to address these issues.
